商朝的史官名目众多，有十几种，已经分成不同层次、不同职掌，大致可分为四大类：贞卜史官，祭祀史官，作册史官，记事史官。这四类史官中，就作用而言，贞卜史官、作册史官偏重于在政务方面为商王服务，这更像现代的行政秘书，祭祀史官、记事史官则偏重于处理事务，类似于现代秘书的日常事务的处理、办事的能力。其中作册史官和记事史官的职能与现代秘书人员最为相近。 古代史官的职能反应到现代秘书所具有的职能：办文、办会、办事。秘书还具有信息管理、调查研究、会务工作、公文处理、档案管理、信访工作、沟通协调、辅助决策等职能。
